2020 Giovanni Canonica Barolo Paiagallo

$180.00

The 2020 Barolos have generally been showing tightly coiled in their youth, with many needing considerable time to reveal themselves. There are, however, notable exceptions. Canonica’s Paiagallo is one of them, with a vibrant core of fruit that is already shining, expressive and inviting.

That said, Canonica’s 2020 Paiagallo is still a wine with plenty to give. It will need a few more years to fully reveal its considerable potential, and I suspect we may eventually look back on 2020 as an underrated Barolo vintage.

Despite the 15% alcohol on the label, there is no sense of imbalance or over-ripeness. The wine is rich in flavour yet remarkably poised, with savoury, saline tones wrapped around vivid red fruit. There is a beautiful transparency here, with fine rose perfume giving way to earth, forest floor and darker, more savoury nuances. The tannins are firm and energetic, but in all the right ways.

Give it time and those edges will soften, the perfume will deepen and the wine will become even more compelling. A Barolo with enormous personality—and one well worth being patient for.
