LaLù Langhe Nebbiolo 2022

$95.00

Organic. This lively, aromatic Nebbiolo comes from an even split of two Lalù-planted sites. The first, Roncaglie in La Morra, is a plot that Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala purchased in 2015 and planted in 2017. Facing east toward Verduno at 400 metres of elevation, it’s a cool, breezy, slow-ripening location where the clay-rich, water-holding soils are especially helpful in dry seasons.

The second source is Bussia Bovi, a sub-cru within Monforte’s renowned Bussia MGA. Lalù’s holding sits at 320 metres in the southern portion of Bussia, between Bricco San Pietro and the area historically referred to as Bussia Arnulfo. With its sand-heavy soils, this site produces a fragrant wine with supple fruit and notable finesse—the yin to Roncaglie’s yang.

In the cellar, the fruit was mostly destemmed while keeping as many whole berries intact as possible, enabling some semi-carbonic maceration to enhance the wine’s aromatic lift. The Bussia fruit fermented and aged in concrete; Roncaglie also fermented in concrete but was matured in large oak foudres.

That both vineyards could carry Barolo classification (with Roncaglie officially doing so from 2023) speaks volumes about the quality. The wine’s combination of translucent fruit, juicy texture, and vivid freshness is a pleasure. For now, its red-fruited, anise- and sarsaparilla-tinged profile is still wound tight, so decanting is advised if you’re pressed for time. Otherwise, open it a few hours ahead to enjoy its clarity, tidy lattice of tannin, and fleshy, expressive character.
