Ribera del Duero

Wines from Ribera del Duero are rich in character

but often misunderstood. Robert Parker’s influence transformed the wine industry, pushing winemakers towards larger, fuller wines with extended extractions and increased oak ageing. This shift even led to the removal of historic vineyards in favour of more commercially popular styles.

One person is working to reverse this trend: Terry Kandylis. A winemaker in Ribera del Duero with a sommelier background from the UK, he currently oversees the wine program at London’s acclaimed Noble Rot and has previously worked at prestigious establishments like 67 Pall Mall, The Fat Duck, and The Ledbury. Recognized as Greece’s Sommelier of the Year in 2015 and the UK’s Sommelier of the Year in 2016, Terry’s journey from London’s elite wine scene to Ribera del Duero showcases his passion and perseverance.

In 2020, Terry visited Ribera del Duero and discovered historic vineyards using the ‘en vaso’ or gobelet method, often referred to as bush vines. The vines, averaging 80 to 100 years old and planted with various grape varieties, were traditionally used for making field blends for local sale or personal consumption. Terry continues this rare practice, starting with 2.14 hectares and expanding to about 8 hectares, with some sites at 925m above sea level. Impressive, right?

“Spain is on the cutting edge of wine, offering some of the most exciting wines in the world today.”

- James Suckling

Vines are 80 to 100 years old!

Ribera has significant plantings of old vines, with up to 9% over 80 years old, but between 1999 and 2014, almost two-thirds of Ribera del Duero’s old vineyards were lost. Few winemakers still use these old vineyards, making Terry’s project even more remarkable.

Bendito Destino is the name of the project, translating to “Blessed Destiny” as Terry feels he is quite blessed to be able to work with these historic sitesBy bringing life into these forgotten vineyards, Terry isn’t just making wine — he’s preserving a piece of history

We’re excited to introduce our first exclusive shipment of wines from Bendito Destino.
