2022 Giovanni Canonica Barolo Grinzane Cavour

$195.00

Giovanni Canonica’s 2022 Barolo Grinzane Cavour comes from a small parcel of vines more than 50 years old in the eastern reaches of the Barolo appellation. The vineyard contains a notably high proportion of the rare Nebbiolo Rosé clone, prized for its floral perfume and aromatic finesse. Canonica farms organically without certification, avoiding herbicides, synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilisers, with treatments limited primarily to copper and sulphur. In the cellar, the grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, followed by an extended maceration of around 30–40 days. The wine is then aged in concrete and large Slavonian oak casks before being bottled unfined and unfiltered, with minimal sulphur use.

The 2022 Grinzane Cavour offers a different expression of Canonica’s Barolo, with a more expansive, generous character alongside its underlying structure. The nose is lifted and expressive, showing ripe red cherry, darker fruit, dried rose, violets and aromatic herbs, with earthy spice and an iron-like mineral note adding complexity. On the palate, the fruit is open and inviting, carried by bright acidity and framed by fine-grained, persistent tannins. There is a lovely combination of breadth and freshness, with savoury earth and subtle spice adding depth through the finish.

As with all of Canonica’s wines, there is a wonderfully traditional, unpolished quality here. The extended maceration lends texture and structure, while the use of large, neutral vessels allows the character of the Nebbiolo to remain at the forefront. Already expressive, the wine has the concentration and tannic backbone to reward time in the cellar, with its floral perfume and savoury complexity likely to deepen with age. A distinctive, small-production Barolo that captures the character of Grinzane Cavour through Canonica’s unmistakably individual approach.
