$80.00

Located in La Seca which is a continental climate. 100 % Verdejo on pebbles, clay and limestone at 750 meters elevation. vines are 40 years old, goblet trained and certified organic.

El Chiviritero is a unique vineyard planted in 1981, with goblet vines located about 750m above sea level. Boulder cloak soil, characteristic of the area of La Seca, and clay loam and limestone layers in deeper levels. Very low yield, around 25hl/ha.

The grapes were harvested by hand on August 21th in 15-kilo crates and pressed straightaway once in the cellar. The spontaneous fermentation was carried out for 45 days without temperature control in French oak barrels of different sizes. Natural malolactic fermentation. Ageing on lees without battonage for 12 months in French oak barrels and another 11 months in steel tanks. Bottled on February 2023 unfinned and unfiltered.

A luminous golden colour with an expressive, layered nose of pear and peach, cereal notes of muesli and sesame, and a subtle herbal, aniseed lift typical of Verdejo. Thoughtful oak and extended lees work add texture and quiet complexity without weight, giving a creamy, mineral-driven palate balanced by fine acidity. Ample yet precise, it’s a beautifully composed and genuinely substantial wine.

Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

The 2023 Majuelo del Chiviritero comes from a 2.53-hectare plot at 750 meters above sea level planted by Isaac Cantalapiedra and his father, Heliodoro, in 1981 on classical fluvial terraces of La Seca covered in boulders. They always get low yields here, so it’s a wine with more concentration, depth and volume, with the energy and tension from the limestone. As they are now doing, the juice from the direct pressing of the bunches fermented with all the sediments in used French oak barrels with indigenous yeasts. The wine matured in French oak barrels for 11 months followed by another seven months in stainless steel. This is very cloudy, and perhaps that makes the wine more closed and backward. It’s more powerful but keeps the balance and poise, still with the chalky feeling but perhaps not as marked as in the 2022. It comes in at 14% alcohol, with a pH of 3.26 and 6.63 grams of acidity. 14,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2025. 93 points
