Deep ruby red. On the nose there are all the red fruits you can think of, cherries, currants, strawberry and raspberry but there’s even a touch of blueberries and black cherry. There’s a lovely smokiness, reminding me of smoked paprika, or even curry powder or cooked black pepper. The palate is rich but balanced, the spiciness is working with the fresh, plush red fruits. Tannins are soft, smooth, silky, a delight to drink and there is a wonderful freshness with the acidic profile. I could see this wine paired with so many things, like smoked trout, steak, cheeses or even the humble Sicilian olive.

This wine comes from a 100-year-old, ungrafted vineyard at 700m altitude on Etna’s north side in Solicchiata, contrada Piano dei Daini. A blend of 90% Nerello Mascalese with Nerello Cappuccio and Alicante (Grenache), it thrives in volcanic soils of sand and ash, adding intense minerality and depth. Farmed naturally with no chemical intervention, vines are trained in the traditional Etna alberello method. Hand-harvested on October 7, 2023, 60% of the grapes were de-stemmed, the rest left as whole bunches. Fermentation was spontaneous with native yeasts, followed by 8 months on lees in stainless steel before bottling unfiltered.
